Human Resources Best Practices (1/23/24 – 1/25/24, Virtual)

January 23 @ 10:00 am - January 25 @ 12:00 pm

$80.00

Program Overview

Today local government professionals are being asked to do more with less…how many hats do you wear….you are the municipal manager, municipal secretary, Finance and HR? Whether you are a new HR professional to municipal management or perform HR responsibilities in a non-typical HR role this is the ideal program for you. In this practical, interactive course, you will acquire transferable skills and knowledge to better equip you for HR best practices and to navigate the legal landmine of what Roseann refers to as “alphabet soup,” because there is just about an acronym for any & everything in HR!

Your organization’s sweet spot is your people as most of your budget is compensation, healthcare, pension and collective bargaining costs. Our employees are our most valued asset and most important strength. Managing human capital is just as important as managing financial capital and therefore should be given the same priority (if not more). In this litigious society, no matter how big or small your municipality may be, if you do not have an adequate commitment to HR your municipality is vulnerable and may be exposed to significant adverse ramifications.

Although there is an old perception that HR is primarily “paper pushers” (yes, payroll must get done), this could not be further from the truth. HR has moved from transactional to transformational. This course is designed to navigate the transactional HR duties with many “cookie cutter, go-to” checklists, templates, job descriptions, performance evaluations, employee handbooks, policies, etc. What is also critical is employee engagement and your organizational culture to promote a safe, comfortable work environment free from any form of discrimination, open two-way ongoing communication with fairness, compassion, civility, and accountability as well as mutual trust and respect. Municipalities must provide leadership and guidance for creativity and innovation through programs, policies, and practices to facilitate a commitment to performance excellence, diversity, equity, inclusion, quality performance and legal compliance where employees have the agility, stability and resiliency to endure professional and personal challenges, to belong and be their authentic selves.

A difficult personnel matter may be time consuming as well as exhausting and overwhelming. There will always be “you can’t make this stuff up,” but after the three HR sessions participants will take away some tools needed for HR best practices.
