This course will be delivered in two 3-hour sessions:

First session: Friday, September 13

Second session: Monday, September 16

The Newly Appointed Municipal Manager Boot Camp is designed to provide new municipal managers with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to effectively lead and manage their municipalities. While the position and duties can vary drastically from one municipality to another, there are basic concepts and baseline knowledge needed to get your municipal management career off to a good start.

Topics:

Introduction to the DCED Local Government Services

Overview of the various forms of local governments

Council manager relationships & responsibilities

Typical departments or services offered in a municipality

Objectives:

These learning objectives aim to ensure that new municipal managers are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of their roles and make informed decisions that benefit their communities.

  1. Introduction to DCED Local Government Services: List the services offered by the Governor’s Center for Local Government Services that apply to your municipality
  2. Forms of Local Government: Compare forms of local government in Pennsylvania and describe that of your municipality
  3. Council manager relationships & responsibilities:   Describe your role in your own municipality and the chain of command. Recognize the importance of building and maintaining the relationships that support your role and the community.
  4. Municipal organization and services:  Compare your municipality to typical departments or services offered in local government and be able to describe your own municipality’s organization.
  5. Look to the future:  Develop your own “first 90 days” plan to identify valuable resources that you need to be successful.

Course Schedule:

9:00 a.m. to Noon both days

Must attend both 3-hour sessions to earn the course certificate

If cancellation received after the 72-hour window, a processing fee will be applied for a portion of the refund.

Those who do not cancel or attend forfeit the full registration fee.
